What Our Clients Say About Us:

I recently hired Mentor to remove my old counter-top, do some tiling, and make some
repairs. He surprised me by doing more than expected, was very accommodating, willing to do more than asked, and did quality work at a reasonable price. I found him to be very honest. He acted like a friend and I was very glad to have found him after having three brushes with incompetents. He was the only one who told me I needed "bullnoses" for the tiling. My incompetent second contractor ordered three times the number of tiles I needed for a small kitchen job. I found Mentor through Park Slope Parents, although the reviews were old. So here's a new one.

We love Mentor by PSPMemberReview on December 16, 2008
I agree with all the praise bestowed below. Mentor's estimate was better than others, and his work is beautiful. He renovated a bathroom for us, replacing everything. His work is top-notch, he and his assistant are polite and they clean up, and they tell you what they're going to do, how long it's going to take, and they do it. What I liked best about Mentor is how gracious he was about wrinkles that came up because of our weird old house, and how can-do he was about dealing with things and fixing them. When he couldn't install an exhaust fan where we'd expected him to, and he had to run duct above the ceiling and redo and plaster it, he just smiled sweetly and took care of it. There is a wonderful sweetness and helpfulness about Mentor that is a pleasure to work with. And we love our bathroom. Highly recommended.

We recently had Mentor renovate our bathroom (removal of built in laundry hamper, floor and wall tile replaced, plumbing, plaster and painting etc.) and from beginning to end, it was a pleasure working with him. Like others have mentioned in their reviews, we found Mentor's estimate to be quite a bit lower than others that we received but the quality of the work and his attention to detail was exceptional. I appreciated the fact that he did all of the work himself, along with help from his assistant, who was great as well. He came every day, bright and early, worked extremely hard and efficiently and even made suggestions that really helped make our bathroom look beautiful, such as a paint color for the walls and marble shelves in the shower. He finished in the time period that he had originally quoted to us and was even happy to accommodate our request for an extra little project. He and his assistant were pleasant, great around my toddler, and cleaned up at the end of each day. I wouldn't think twice about hiring him again for any work that we might have done in the future and I only wish that I had known about him four years ago when we had our kitchen renovated!"

He's great! by PSPMemberReview on May 1, 2008
Mentor remodeled our co-op's kitchen and we were more than impressed with his professionalism, work ethic, fairness in price and flexibility with our schedule (which was a challenge for him since Lowe's completely messed up our cabinetry order). His price quote came in lower than other contractors but don't think for a second this will compromise the quality of the service. We're going to hire him again to do our bathrooms!

Mentor just finished a renovation of our kitchen and we couldn't be happier. The reviewer below lives in our building so we got to see his work and hear first hand about his work. Otherwise, we may not have gone with him because his estimate was lower than the rest, and I may have been somewhat suspicious.
Mentor works quickly (not taking other jobs at the same time), neatly, and does very good work. He is completely trustworthy and reliable and his price was more than fair. He did not charge us more than the estimate and would not take any money from us until our cabinets were installed.
I can not recommend Mentor enough and I would certainly interview and get an estimate from him if you are remodeling a kitchen or bathroom. If you do and would like further information or to see his work, ask him for Andy?s phone number as a reference.

Client 2:
We’'ve just completed a full gut renovation of a our kitchen and an adjoining bathroom in our 1901 townhouse.
We found so many of our trades and suppliers here on brownstoner, so i’m excited to spread the good word on a few.
Contractor:
Mentor Frangu / Altina Tile Care – 917-692-6234
Mentor was recommended by a few people around here. We got 4 bids and Mentor’s was one of the lowest…we got such a good vibe from him and wanted someone trustworthy since we weren’t going to be around during the day…he did an amazing job! he is the nicest most conscientious, trustworthy person, and didn’t nickel and dime us for every little (or big) change.
he brought many suggestions and ideas, especially when the demolition revealed cut beams and a host of other problems. He dealt with our architects and other trades in the kindest most respectful manner and was always available when he was needed. He was on site every day with his 2 workers, cleaned up before they left, and doesn’t work on multiple jobs at the same time.
I trusted them all totally. We had a 2 week break in our renovation when various materials were late… i was never worried that he wouldn’t come back to finish everything out. If something was incorrect he gladly fixed it without a fuss.
I feel so lucky to have found him. he and his guys were a true pleasure to work with!

Client 3:
I got a lot of information from this board that helped with our recent kitchen renovation, so I thought I would report to help others who are going through the process.
We live in a coop in Prospect Heights and remodeled our small (approx 9×9) kitchen. We interviewed 4 contractors whose names we got off various websites and from people in our building. The quotes ranged from $5,000 to $15,000 for labor. We normally would not have considered the high or the low bids, but ended up going with the low because he had done work in the building so we could see his work and he came highly recommended. His name is Mentor Frangu and his company is Altina Tile Care.
We had initially planned on going with Kraftmaid cabinets and were going to Lowes and dealing with Alicia Mead who was recommended on this board. She was great to work with, however, we did not use her because Lowes does not do measurements unless they do the installation, and none of the contractors we interviewed measured either. We then went to Gold and Reiss, who was recommended to us by other people in our building. We had planned on going with them until I checked out Park Slope Kitchen Gallery, who was also recommended on this board. We dealt with Keenia Farrell there, and she was wonderful. They have only a small selection of brands for cabinets, but we really liked the Medallion cabinets and she also had the best price on our Casesarstone counters.
For flooring, we had looked all over. We ordered tile from Country Floors, but then did not like the color when we received it. We returned that tile (minus a 30% restocking fee) and ended up getting porcelain tiles from A&K tiles on 9th Street in Park Slope and we happy with their service and price.
For the backsplash we went to Nemo tile. Unfortunately, we fell in love with their Insterstyle glass tiles and they are the only dealer that carries this line in the area. I say unfortunately because the price was very high (and the shipping was about $450 and took over six weeks) and the customer service was bad. We dealt with a salesman there named Steven who was quite condescending and not responsive to our concerns. The tiles are beautiful, but we certainly won’t be going back there.
The cabinets arrived on time and Mentor and his worker began work on January 7th. In 7 days of work they removed a wall and all cabinets, etc, moved electrical, installed a waterproofing membrane (required by our board), and installed recessed lighting, flooring, and cabinets. Our counter was installed a week later and Mentor returned for one day to connect the water. We then had to wait a month for the backsplash to come in and he did that in a day.
If you are looking to have some work done, I would definitely consider interviewing Mentor- I can not recommend him highly enough. His prices are great, his quality is very good, and he is a completely trustworthy and reliable man. He wouldn’t even take a dime from us until the cabinets were installed. If you contact him and would like further information or to see his work, ask him for Andy's phone number as a reference.

We just finished re-doing the upstairs bathroom of our house on Sherman Street in Windsor Terrace and we’d like to recommend Mentor Frangu of Altina Tile Care. This is our third bathroom with Mentor and we can’t recommend Mentor enough. The man is an artist with tile. Plus he and his crew are super professional and very friendly.
